How to CORRECTLY Hang Wall Art
So you’ve decided on the art pieces you’d like to add on to your walls, to add character to your space…it’s been a long process, we know but we’re sure you weren’t ready for next daunting task you need to do… Hang those pieces correctly.
We cannot be more serious when we say that even the most stunning art pieces and choices can be ruined by hanging them incorrectly. Don’t worry though, we got your back… here are a few steps you need to do to make sure you make the most out of your Wall Arts.
Choose the Right Size Artwork
Hanging a wall art properly also depends highly on the size of the wall art that you’ll be purchasing. You wouldn’t want it to look too big or too small for the space.
A good rule of thumb when hanging it behind a buffet or a sofa, is making sure that the furniture is longer than the art piece on either side. The wall you will be hanging it should be two-thirds its length- it’s a pretty easy math.
Hanging a wall art by itself though, takes more calculation. To figure those dimensions, start by measuring the length and width of the wall. Then, multiply each number by 0.571, which is four-sevenths as a decimal. Easy enough with a calculator right?
Adapt the Placement to the Room
To determine how high you should hang your wall art, take note that an piece of art should generally be 57 inches from the floor.
To find that spot, start by measuring the height of the picture and then dividing that number by two to find its center. Afterward, measure the distance from the picture wire or nail hook to the top of the frame. Subtract that distance from half of the picture’s height, and finally, add your result to 57. Word of caution though, math is no substitute for perception in interior design. While you can use these figures as a guide, don’t be afraid to make adjustments accordingly. For example, when a room has high ceilings, it may make more sense to hang your wall art slightly higher than usual to account for the extra space.
Hanging the Wall Art
Ok… the finale. Finally hanging the wall art. There’s a simple way to make it work on your own. All it takes is some paper and a little tape.
Start by tracing your piece of wall art on a piece of paper. Then, cut it out so you have a template to use. Make a mark on the template to show where the picture wire or hook will be by measuring out the same distance as from the wire to the top of the frame. With the marking-side out, match up the nail mark on your template to the nail mark on the wall and secure it in place with tape. This will give you a chance to step back and see how the wall art will look from farther away. Feel free to make adjustments as you see fit.
Once you’re happy with how the wall art is placed, break out your nail and hammer. Place the nail in the spot you’ve marked. Then, peel away the template. From there, all you need to do is put the picture in place.
That’s it and you’re done! If you’re eyeing on hanging a gallery wall. Also, let’s not forget that some wall arts are not meant to be hanged…stay tuned to our next blog entries. However we’d love to know how these steps worked out for you! See gallery wall prints...
